copsnbobbers final

Since it was launched in 2003, the Police Benevolent & Protective Association Unit #6 has hosted a Cops 2 Bobbers Kids Fishing Derby each year. This year the event will be on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Rock Cut State Park (7318 Harlem Rd Loves Park, Illinois 61111.) We encourage all children between the ages of 6-13 to come out for a day of fun and fishing. We set up the derby into four age groups 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13. As each kid checks in at the Red Oak Shelter located on the South side of Pierce Lake, they are given a score card to record the size and number of fish they catch throughout the day. Various law enforcement officers and volunteers work the shoreline during the course of the derby helping kids measure their fish caught and even bait a few hooks. This allows law enforcement the time to interact with kids, answers a lot of questions and take an active role in mentoring our youth in the sport of fishing.

We will start the derby at 8:00 AM and kids will be allowed to fish until 12:00 PM. As the kids hand in their score cards they are directed to a casting contest. As kids cast away, the score cards are tallied and two winners from each age group are selected for the Big Fish and Most Fish trophies. We also will award winners of each age group in the Long Cast contest a trophy. We also have a drawing for prizes for fishing poles, tackle boxes and assorted fishing gear.

If you enjoy fishing you must recognize the need to pass on our outdoor heritage of fishing to the next generation. We need to be encouraging more of our youth to get outdoors and experience the joys of fishing. These days, too many kids spend too little time outdoors. Fishing teaches patience, respect for the environment, plus it's just plain fun.

Our primary goal is to teach children there is an alternative to drugs and violence through the sport of fishing. This event not only provides outstanding law enforcement mentors, but the opportunity for families to spend quality time together. I encourage you to be a mentor and spend some time on the water and take a kid fishing. We are proud to host this free event and look forward to seeing you on the water.
